![]() There was nothing more interesting to illuminate than a face. “That’s when I said to myself that I wanted to do this job all my life. It is there that he understands that he has ventured on a path from which he would never deviate. In 1983, he was hired to sign the photograph of 1984, by Michael Radford, based on the book by George Orwell. But the world of cinema has decided otherwise. He saw himself as a documentary filmmaker and also signed several clips for musicians of the time. ![]() “1984”, a turning pointĭespite studying art, then the National Film and Television School in Buckinghamshire (north-west London), where he was only accepted on his second attempt, Roger Deakins never imagined becoming a cinematographer. These works, no cinema in Torquay would have dared to screen them. A sheet as a screen, a 16 mm projector and a dozen chairs arranged hastily allowed him to discover films like Last year in Marienbad (1961), by Alain Resnais, or Alphaville, a strange adventure of Lemmy Caution (1965), by Jean-Luc Godard. Roger Deakins, born in 1949, belongs to this generation for whom going to a film club was part of the initiatory journey of any high school student. In Torquay, the seaside town in the south of England where he grew up, his neighborhood had six cinemas (there are only two left today). ![]() The cinema, however, has always been part of his life. It was by chance, believes the septuagenarian, that he embraced this career. He worked, among others, for the Coen brothers ( Barton Fink, Fargo, No Country for Old Men), Denis Villeneuve ( Prisoners, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049) and Sam Mendes ( Skyfall, 1917 and the most recent Empire of Light, in theaters on 1 er March). And, in this respect, the British cinematographer is one of the greatest. His job, although unknown to the general public, is essential: it consists of signing the light and the shots for a film.
